How to complete a Codeword puzzle

The Puzzle Vault

Here at The Puzzle Vault, we love a good puzzle. Our first book that we published was a Codeword. This may be something new to a lot of you so we thought it might be a good idea to do a bit of an introduction on what they are and some tips on how to complete them.

A codeword puzzle is a type of crossword puzzle where every square is blank and each square contains a number that corresponds to a specific letter of the alphabet.

Instructions for Completing a Codeword Puzzle

1. Understand the Basics

  • Each number corresponds to a specific letter (e.g., 1 = A, 2 = B, etc.).

  • The goal is to fill in the grid with the correct letters to form valid words.

  • Typically, one or more letters are provided as a starting point.

2. Gather Materials

  • You’ll need the puzzle grid, the numbered squares, and the starting letters (usually provided in the puzzle).

  • A pencil is recommended, so you can make corrections.

3. Begin with the Starting Clues

  • Locate the numbers with pre-filled letters in the grid or the key.

  • Identify all occurrences of those numbers in the grid and fill them with the corresponding letters.

4. Look for Short Words

  • Focus on 2- or 3-letter words. These are easier to solve because they have fewer possibilities.

  • Common short words include "at," "is," "in," "an," etc.

5. Use Letter Frequency

  • Certain letters like vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and common consonants (R, S, T, L, N) appear frequently in English.

  • Guess possible vowels for spaces surrounded by consonants and test common consonant-vowel patterns.

6. Identify Word Patterns

  • Look for common prefixes (e.g., "re," "un") or suffixes (e.g., "ing," "ed").

  • Identify repeated numbers within the same word and consider which letters are often doubled (e.g., "ee," "oo," "tt").

7. Cross-Check with the Grid

  • Each word must fit with its intersecting words. Check each guess for compatibility with surrounding letters.

8. Use Trial and Error

  • If you're unsure about a letter, lightly pencil in your guess and see how it fits with the rest of the puzzle.

  • If a guess doesn’t work, erase and try another letter.

9. Verify Each Word

  • As the puzzle progresses, words should begin to emerge. Make sure each word is valid in English.

10. Finish the Grid

  • Gradually fill in the entire grid, keeping an eye on intersecting words and re-checking earlier guesses if needed.

Additional Tips

  • Work Strategically: Prioritise areas where multiple clues overlap.

  • Be Patient: Codeword puzzles often require some trial and error.

  • Stay Flexible: Be willing to erase and revise your guesses.

Once you’ve filled in the entire grid with valid words, congratulations—you’ve completed the codeword puzzle!
